Länsi-Saimaa

The operating area of Leader Länsi-Saimaa, situated in South Carelia, includes the municipalities of Lemi, Luumäki, Savitaipale and Taipalsaari as well as the rural areas of the city of Lappeenranta.


South Karelia is located on the shores of lake Saimaa, the fourth largest lake in Europe, near the border with Russia. The area has strong forest industry and expertise in bioenergy, there is an international Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) specializing in the sustainable development. There is a multilingual staff in the area, that is available for trade and other business needs.

Proximity to the border stimulates businesses and economic life particularly in the areas of trade and tourism.

Transport links with the capital of Finland Helsinki, Russia and other European countries are well connected.

There is a large number of manufacturing companies and process industry companies, and a great amount of small companies as well.
